Pop A Woody

Carbonwood Bicycle by Gary Galego… toooo clean!

Nifty bikes are always fun to come by and this plywood and carbon fiber is a real gem. It was created by designer Gary Galego who wanted to create a unique mixture for this bike but still give it a light frame and make it easy to ride. I think it’s really rad looking, the detailing in all of the joints is absolutely beautiful and the paleness of the wood looks amazing against the deep blackness of the metal parts. You can read a bit more about Gary and the bike by clicking here.

Super Sized

The Nintendo DSi XL will be coming to the US in Q1 2010. What’s the XL for you ask? How about a bigger form factor and larger screens. From what I’ve read… this will not replace the DSi… XL will be an additional model among Nintendo’s portable handheld offerings.

Since Europe and Japan can’t have all the fun — unless, of course, it’s a black Nintendo Wii — the super-sized DSi XL is also due out in the US sometime in Q1 2010, according to a spokesperson speaking with Joystiq. Still no word on price, but we wouldn’t be surprised if it parallel the slight markup for the ¥20,000 / US $221 Japanese version. Looks like that smaller-screen version isn’t looking so hot for Grandma’s Christmas present anymore.

Utility Utensil

You-Can-Eat-All.

Does the Chopork have an identity crisis? Like would you classify it as a fork or a chopstick or both? Nah! I wouldn’t bother much about the functionality of two sticks turning from a fork to chopsticks. I’d be worried about branding it as Chopork; sounds more like chop-the-pork! Got any better name suggestions?

Beautiful Bano

Check out this bathoroom at the Lydmar Hotel in Stockholm. Not too flashy or crowded, use of materials and accessories is jussst right. Looking at this just brings out the interior design animal in me.

Mental Screening

Imagine if in the future… you can actually see peoples thoughts. Kind of like a Sookie Stackhouse superpower but with visuals! There will be a huge spike in awkward moments. Sex on about 90% of guy’s foreheads… the end of surprises, lies, guessing, shady-ass people, the phrase “tell me what you’re thinking…”. Someone will come up with a mind reader blocker headband FOSHO.

You already know what’s on in my mind, but what if you couldsee exactly what I’m thinking about? Might not be long before you can, because there have been some minor successes in thought decoding technology.

I say “thought decoding” instead of “mind reading,” because what researchers are working on is a way to decode and analyze brain activity in order to predict the thought, or more precisely, the image in a person’s mind. So far they’ve had limited success using small sample sizes of YouTube videos and thorough scans to study brain activity in order to assume which videos would produce what sort of activity.

The research is freaky with a heaping serving of awesome, and I can’t wait until mindcasts are the newest trend.

Crush A Lot

The NNew CAN is a soda can concept designed to easily twist and crush into the smallest possible shape for more efficient waste management. The can also features an “lifted lip” opener for easy crack-openablility haha (TAILGATE APPROVED!!!). Personally not a big deal for me… but for those times when you just cut your nails = lifesaverrrr!

Cereal Silos

I love cereal… best food to eat anytime of day. One day I would love to just have a few of these mounted somewhere on the kitchen wall filled with my favorite cereals. So official. SmartSpace Dry Food Dispenser comes in two models… wall-mounted which will run you $47 and a countertop version at $29. I knew wall-mounted was more official… $18 bucks more… geeez they better be VESA-compliant!

Must it always have to be about kitchens with lack of space? Can’t we for once focus on showing off smart products on counter-tops or wall mounted goodies! I vote for a change in perspective and say that stuff like the SmartSpace Dry Food Dispenser be on the forefront. It’s good to hold pastas, breakfast cereals, pulses etc, plus you can let your creativity get the better of you and fill it up in a very decorative way with color-coordinated dry snacks and beans.

The wall mounted version or the counter top dispenser ooze with style and detailing. For instance the dispensing knob looks cute and works like a tap, dispensing 1 ounce of food with each turn. The measuring cup at the bottom also measures out contents with accuracy.

Japan COTY

If I were to ever get a hybrid car… it probably be a Prius. Not a lot of people are fond of its shape… but I think its pretty sleek both previous and current gen models. Over in Japan, the Prius has won the Car of the Year award. Shout out to all the Prius owners out there! Let me know if you have one so I can get a ride… we can get some Mexican food.

For the past 30 years, Japan has declared a car of the year, an award given to newly released or redesigned vehicles released from November 1st of the previous year to October 1st of the current year. More than 60 jurors composed of Japanese journalists receive an allocation of votes, and the car with the most votes comes away with the crown.

This year the Toyota Prius narrowly edged out the Honda Insight, continuing the recent trend of environmentally-friendly winners. Other notable winners included the new Volkswagen Golf, which was named the Import Car of the Year, the Mitsubishi i-MiEV, which was declared to have the Most Advanced Technology. The Nissan Fairlady Z won the category of Most Fun, and finally the Subaru Legacy took top honors for Best Value.

Apple Tidbit

If you ever bought anything from the Apple Store, you might have noticed those little handheld checkout devices employees use to ring you up. Apple will be switching those bulky point-of-sale computers for iPod touches in the near future. Makes perfect sense… oh and probably because of this little guy.

Apple stores are ditching those clunky handheld point of sale computers—which are Windows-run—for iPod touches that can do the same thing. There’s no way to write this story up without making an easy Microsoft joke, which isn’t fair because those point of sale units have been a big part of why Apple stores have been such easy places to drop loads of cash.
